　　《老人與海》（The Old Man and the Sea）是海明威于1951年在古巴寫的一篇中篇小說，于1952年出版。《老人與海》是海明威最著名的作品之一，它圍繞一位老年古巴漁夫，與一條巨大的馬林魚在離岸很遠的灣流中搏斗。《老人與海》奠定了海明威在世界文學(xué)中的突出地位，對于他1954年獲得諾貝爾文學(xué)獎也起了重要作用。后有同名電影、動畫、歌曲等作品。

　　1.每一天都是一個新的日子。走運當(dāng)然是好的，不過我情愿做到分毫不差。這樣，運氣來的時候，你就有所準備了。（Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.）

　　2.不過話得說回來，沒有一樁事是容易的。（But,then,nothing is easy.）

　　3.一個人并不是生來就要被打敗的，人盡可以被毀滅，但卻不能被打敗（A man is not made for defeat,a man can be destroyed but not defeated.）

　　4.陸地上空的云塊這時候像山岡般聳立著，海岸只剩下一長條綠色的線，背后是些灰青色的小山。海水此刻呈現(xiàn)藍色，深的簡直發(fā)紫了。（The clouds over the land now rose like mountains and the coast was only a long green line with the gray blue hills behind it. The water was a dark blue now,so dark that it was almost purple.）

　　5.現(xiàn)在不是去想缺少什么的時候，該想一想憑現(xiàn)有的東西你能做什么。（Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.）

　　6.人不抱希望是很傻的。（ It is silly not to hope,he thought.）

　　7.但是這些傷疤中沒有一塊是新的。它們像無魚可打的沙漠中被侵蝕的地方一般古老。他身上的一切都顯得古老，除了那雙眼睛，它們像海水一般藍，是愉快而不肯認輸?shù)摹＃˙ut none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.）

　　8.這兩個肩膀挺怪，人非常老邁了，肩膀卻依然很強健，脖子也依然很壯實，而且當(dāng)老人睡著了，腦袋向前耷拉著的時候，皺紋也不大明顯了。（They were strange shoulders,still powerful although very old,and the neck was still strong too and the creases did not show so much when the old man was asleep and his head fallen forward.）

　　9.他的襯衫上不知打了多少次補丁，弄得像他那張帆一樣，這些補丁被陽光曬得褪成了許多深淺不同的顏色。（His shirt had been patched so many times that it was like the sail and the patches were faded to many different shades by the sun.）
