母親節起源于希臘，古希臘人在這一天向希臘神話中的眾神之母赫拉致敬。在17世紀中葉，母親節流傳到英國，英國人把封齋期的第四個星期天作為母親節。在這一天里，出門在外的年青人將回到家中，給他們的母親帶上一些小禮物。
現代意義上的母親節起源于美國，由Amanm、Jarvis(1864-1948)發起，她終身未婚，一直陪伴在她母親身邊。于1905年世紀，在母親去世時，Amanm悲痛欲絕。兩年后(1907年)，Amanm和她的朋友開始寫信給有影響的部長、商人、議員來尋求支持，以便讓母親節成為一個法定的節日。Amanm認為子女經常忽視了對母親的感情，她希望母親節能夠讓人多想一想母親為家庭所付出的一切。
第一個母親節于1908年5月10日在西弗吉尼亞和賓夕法尼亞州舉行，在這次節日里，康乃磬被選中為獻給母親節的花，并以此流傳開來。
1913年，美國國會通過了一份議案，將每年5月的第二個星期天作為法定的母親節。母親節從此流傳開來。
